How to learn beginner vocabulary

The most valuable word is one you are likely to recognise or use. Grouping vocabulary by situation gives each word a network of meaning. Learn καφές with νερό, τσάι, and an ordering phrase rather than placing it in an unrelated alphabetical list.

The entries below use common dictionary or beginner forms. Greek nouns have grammatical gender, verbs change with the subject and tense, and adjective endings change to agree with nouns. Start by recognising the listed form, then learn its variations inside complete phrases.

Learn a word with a phrase

• Θέλω νερό.

  Thélo neró.I want water.Connect the verb θέλω with a useful noun.

• Πού είναι το ξενοδοχείο;

  Poú íne to xenodohío?Where is the hotel?Use a place word inside a complete question.

• Ο καφές είναι ζεστός.

  O kafés íne zestós.The coffee is hot.Notice how the adjective fits the masculine noun.

• Έχω δύο εισιτήρια.

  Ého dío isitíria.I have two tickets.A verb, number, and travel noun in one sentence.

The form of εισιτήριο changes to plural εισιτήρια in the final example. This is why phrase learning gradually teaches grammar without requiring you to memorise every pattern first.

A simple spaced review method

1. Choose eight to ten words from one category.
2. Recall the meaning from Greek, then Greek from the situation.
3. Say or write one short phrase with each word.
4. Review after a short break, the next day, and several days later.
5. Keep difficult words in rotation and retire words that are consistently easy.
6. Mix categories once each small set is secure.

Recognition usually comes before active use. Treat a word you understand but cannot yet say as progress, then keep giving it opportunities to move into speech.
